Training like this has always had a money problem.
Atelier training is small by necessity — twelve students, two teachers, a room, and a model. That is what makes it work and it is also what makes it cost what it costs. The people who most want it are frequently the people who cannot find the money for it, and that has been true of this tradition for two hundred years.
Two funded places will not fix that. They will change it completely for two people, which is the part that is actually within reach.
“Support rigorous traditional arts education for teens and adults in South Jersey. Building a new Conservatory of Art, we bring Old Master traditions to a new generation through observational realism. Of just 12 places in our flagship Conservatory, two will be opened to deserving students through scholarships.”
A year, not a gesture.
A place in the room
Two days a week in the studio for a full year, with the same teaching and the same critique as everyone else in the cohort. Not an observer’s seat.
A teenager’s first school
Half the cohort is fourteen to seventeen. For a young person whose family cannot fund a year of art training, this is frequently the only version of it that exists.
Something that compounds
Learning to see does not expire. It goes on working in whatever that person makes for the rest of their life, and in what they eventually teach someone else.
Write to Lisa, and she’ll tell you where it goes.
The fund is being built now, for awards that begin in 2027. Gifts of any size go toward the two places — and if you want to fund one outright, or hear who it went to, that is a conversation rather than a form.
