The week

Two days in the studio. Two at your own easel. One class online.

You are in SoundPlex Studios · 6713 Rudderow Ave, Pennsauken, NJ 08109 — about ten minutes from center city Philadelphia across the Ben Franklin Bridge, and five minutes from the Cherry Hill Mall. twice a week. The rest of the work happens where you live — which is the point of setting up a studio there, and why we help you do it.

What the year contains

You learn to see, then to master the craft, then to use your own voice.

Realist training develops over time. Like an instrument, it takes repetition, patience, thoughtful correction and experienced coaching — which is why the three parts of the year have to happen in that order, and why about six months in, your eye changes.

  1. Sculpted study of two hands, lit sharply from one side against a dark ground.
    I

    Train the eye

Cast drawing and sight-size. Plumb, level and comparative measurement. Perspective, and the anatomy of form learned from the figure before it is carried out to animals and architecture.

  2. Sculpted head of a child with curling hair, on a wooden base.
    II

    Understand the craft

Structure, proportion, space, light and form. Line, shape, value, and the intensity of color. Master copies, still life and the living model, until following an observation all the way through stops being a struggle.

  3. Painted portrait built from blocks of high-key color — a looser, more personal handling.
    III

    Use your voice

Academic training often takes the student's voice out; the last part of the year puts it back. You have the whole language now, and it controls the brush — so the year ends in work that is yours rather than in imitation.

Admissions

How a place is offered.

Applying is free and takes about twenty minutes. There are twelve places — six for adults, six for students aged fourteen to seventeen — and they are offered one at a time.

  1. Send the application

Your background, what you want from the year, and five to ten examples of your work. Free, and it takes about twenty minutes.

  2. Book the interview

Choose a time as soon as you've applied — there's no waiting to be invited. The $79 is paid when you book, and it covers the portfolio review, the processing, and the conversation itself.

  3. You meet Lisa and Matt

Fifteen minutes, after they have read your application and looked at your work. Bring questions rather than a presentation.

  4. A decision

Twelve places, six for adults and six for teenagers. Applying does not guarantee one — this is a real admissions process, and we would rather be honest about that now.

This year

2026–27

The founding cohort runs short: it began in October rather than September, so the year is eight months instead of nine. That is why the tuition is lower. It still finishes with the residency in Tuscany. You may start at any point; tuition is prorated.

Twelve places, and a real application.

Applying is free and takes about twenty minutes. Not everyone is accepted — we would rather say that now than after you have paid anything. If you would like to talk it through first, that is what the $44 conversation is for.
